Groblersdal, Limpopo, police are investigating allegations of assault on two rugby fans and malicious damage to property at the weekend.

The victims had initially laid charges of a racially motivated attack against the suspects.

The incident occurred as the suspects were returning from a rugby match at the Groblersdal Rugby Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Inspector Nopofu Jelle confirmed the incident in which two white rugby supporters returning from the game attacked three black youths travelling in a BMW and chased them through the streets of Groblersdal up to the driveway of their home.

She said they were only investigating the criminal part of the case and not the racial part of it "even if the complainants claimed the case was racially motivated".

She said: "We are investigating a case of assault and malicious damage to property and no arrests have been made yet."

The complainant and owner of the damaged vehicle, Strike Mnguni, 30, said two white male occupants of a Volkswagen Golf 5 Sport were responsible for what he described as a racially motivated physical and verbal attack on him and his three friends.

Mnguni was at home when it all started. At the time of the incident his car was being used by Emmanuel Sibanyoni, the driver, Cacius Selwane and Enoch Tshehla.
