The recent arrest of a suspected rapist and serial killer has not stopped the vigilance of parents in Phahameng, Modimolle.

This was evident when a Sowetan team visited the area yesterday to gauge the mood after the arrest of the suspected killer. Most parents now escort their children to and from school daily.

Modimolle has been hit by a spate of child murders and disappearances since 2004. More than 10 children have gone missing between 2004 and 2008.

Police recently made a breakthrough when they arrested a man believed to be responsible for the murders and rapes.

David Rannditsheni, 45, has been charged with 17 counts, ranging from rape, murder, indecent assault and abuse.

The alleged serial rapist and murderer is expected to appear in the Modimolle magistrate's court on July 11.
