The ID of a Limpopo man who was robbed in Johannesburg left the police baffled after it was found in the pocket of a dead man.
The dead man had earlier robbed Jeffery Mammushi, from Ga-Malaka village, of his belongings, including his ID. The robber was apparently attacked and killed in a separate incident while carrying the victim's stolen items.
Johannesburg police, who found the dead man, then phoned Mammushi's family, informing them of his death. It was only discovered later that the deceased was not Mammushi.
His father, Johannes Mammushi, said: "I was called at my workplace in Pretoria North and told about Jeffery's death. Together with other family members, we started funeral arrangements.
"I had even asked my bosses for a week's leave so that I could bury my son."
Richard Mogoane, a family member, yesterday told Sowetan: "The experience was harrowing, but we are glad that it was just a misunderstanding."
It was while family and friends were discussing funeral arrangements that Mammushi came home and told the family what had happened.
