Civic leaders must act now

Are we clutching at straws because we can't believe what's happening with the xenophobic attacks in Gauteng - or is a third force behind the mayhem?

Are we clutching at straws because we can't believe what's happening with the xenophobic attacks in Gauteng - or is a third force behind the mayhem?

For the past few days politicians and policemen have been hinting that the attacks are organised.

On Monday the police said they had identified the people behind the mayhem and murder and promised they would soon be arrested.

Well, guys, what are you waiting for? Do you want the whole country to go up in smoke while our reputation as a bastion of democracy is flushed down the toilet.

Civic leaders worth their salt have come out against this foul form of bigotry and almost every upright South African is appalled by the madness.

Hundreds upon hundreds of ordinary South Africans are working day and night to give succour to the victims.

This is a good thing. More people of goodwill should do their bit to help the hapless immigrants.

We cannot afford to look the other way in the face of such repugnant behaviour. To do so is to be complicit in the persecution and slaughter of innocents.

It is worth remembering that bigotry knows no bounds and respects no rules. Today it takes the form of xenophobia. The bigots are having a field day venting their misdirected anger on immigrants.

Who knows who they will target next?
