Soccer legend Phil Masinga has been fingered as the cover-up man in Doctor Khumalo's alleged drunk driving incident two weeks ago.
Masinga is said to have whisked away Lizzy Moloto, the mysterious woman who was travelling with Khumalo on the night his BMW collided with a taxi carrying three passengers near Maraisburg, west of Johannesburg.
All the taxi passengers - including a pregnant woman - were seriously injured. The driver escaped with minor injuries.
According to the police, though Moloto was trapped in the BMW and the jaws of life had to be used to free her, she refused to give them a statement or any details about the accident.
She later disappeared.
Khumalo could be slapped with negligent, reckless and drunken driving charges.
But when Sowetan contacted Masinga yesterday he claimed not to know who Moloto was or where she lived.
"Why are you asking me about Lizzy, it's the police who should be asking me that, not Sowetan," he said. "I don't know anything about what you are saying."
He is said to have been driving behind Khumalo when the accident happened. He was allegedly in the company of a woman known only as Vivian.
Police spokesman Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the police were still busy with investigations. Khumalo would not be charged before they are completed.
Opperman said Moloto did not have a choice in the matter of giving a statement.
"As a witness she will have to give a statement," he said. "If she refuses she will be summoned by the court to do so."
When Sowetan contacted Khumalo he said he did not know of any Lizzy and then hung up the phone.
