ANC president Jacob Zuma has condemned the xenophobic attacks that characterised the ongoing violence in Alexandra.
Zuma, who was addressing a graduation ceremony at the University of Zululand, of which he is a chancellor, said xenophobia had no place in a democratic, free South Africa.
"Our people should avoid taking out their frustrations owing to unemployment or crime on immigrants," he said.
"It is Alexandra today and could be another area tomorrow if we do not deal with the matter."
Zuma, who spoke strongly against crime when he was elected ANC president in Polokwane last December, said if there were criminal elements in the immigrant community, as is alleged, such information should be given to the police.
