Top honours for budding writer

Journalist Xolile Bhengu was named Newcomer of the Year in Citadel's annual Words on Money financial journalism awards.

Bhengu won the award for her article published on June 29 last year about the plight of cleaner Doris Msibi who borrowed R4000 from Nedbank to pay for her daughter's funeral without realising she would be repaying a total of R11509,55.

Citadel said it had introduced the newcomer category to encourage those just starting out or others who did not enter before to participate.

Other finalists were Neesa Moodley of Personal Finance, Jana Marais of Rapport and Sikonathi Mantshantsha of FINweek.

Citadel's Neil Brown said: "For tackling topics affecting the most vulnerable investors - those in lower income groups, the winner is Xolile Bhengu."
