Police are looking for the parents or relatives of an abandoned four-year-old girl who was found wandering the streets of Boipatong in the Vaal.

The child, known only as Thandeka, was found by passerby Lucy Mkhosana, 26, on Monday afternoon.

Mkhosana said she was walking in Amatolo Street when she saw the child. She was filthy, hungry and crying for her mother.

The child claimed that her mother's name was Vuyiswa.

She said her own name was Thandeka but did not remember where she lived or where her parents were.

"She said she last saw her mother that morning. I took her to Boipatong police station," said Mkhosana.

Police spokesman Constable Thembeka Koago said the child was hysterical and hungry when she was brought to the police station.

Koago said a search for the child's relatives was unsuccessful.

"We suspect that the child was from one of the neighbouring townships and deliberately abandoned in Boipatong," she said.

The child was taken to a place of safety.
