Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
An 11-year-old schoolgirl is seven months pregnant after she was allegedly raped by a schoolmate.
The Grade 4 pupil at Tokoloho Primary School at Grootvlei, near Balfour in Mpumalanga, was allegedly raped by a 14-year-old neighbour at Vlakfontein Farm late last year.
The Grade 9 father-to-be was arrested on Wednesday and appeared in the Balfour magistrate's court the same afternoon on a charge of rape.
The case was postponed to July 10 to allow the teenage mother to give birth and DNA tests to be conducted.
Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the girl's class teacher noticed some changes in her behaviour.
"She noticed a drop in her performance in class. She was in most instances absent from school and showed signs of behavioural withdrawals," said Khoabane.
The teacher suspected that the girl was pregnant and spoke to her about it. She then alerted the school principal about her suspicions.
The girl's mother was invited to school on Monday, where she equally raised her concerns about her daughter's appearance and behaviour. She then took her daughter to the local clinic where the pregnancy was confirmed.
The baby is due in July.
The girl told her parents and the police that the 14-year-old neighbour allegedly raped her twice last year. Sources said the teenagers and their parents were called together and later confirmed the allegations.
Sources at the school also confirmed the girl had stopped schooling.
The boy had not been seen at school since he appeared in court on Wednesday. He was released into the custody of his parents.
