Court action looms over 'erratic polls'

The ANC in the Free State might be taken to court again by its own regional and branch structures after fresh electoral irregularities were reported during the current branch general meetings (BGMs).

Some branches and regions that were affected by a Bloemfontein judgment that nullified previous party elections have complained about irregularities in the current electoral process.

The branches are blaming the ANC provincial executive committee, the regional task team (RTT) and some councillors of what they call "Zanufication" or manipulation of electoral process to ensure results favour certain candidates.

They also claim the RTT sometimes calls secret branch meetings without informing those they considered to be their opponents or likely to vote against them.

A source in the Lejweleputswa region said the 69 branches that have held their new branch general meetings had done so under heavy political pressure and intimidation of who must be voted for.
