Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) has embarked on a programme to educate clubs about how to host a successful event and on the use of banned substances in sport.

James Moloi, CGA's road running commission convenor, said the workshop will take place at Braamfontein Recreation Centre tomorrow.

"It will be a day-long workshop, from 9am to 5pm. We will divide it into two sessions, the morning one dealing with organising a successful event and the afternoon one dealing with drugs," said Moloi.

"Representatives of the (JOC) Joint Operation Committee, which is made up of all the service providers in the City of Johannesburg, will also be there.

"JOC members are from the metro police, emergency services, City Power, metro bus service, road agencies, water, City Parks and events management.

"Part of their responsibility is to ensure that all the basic requirements are in place before approving the hosting of an event in the city.

"As the road running commission, we know that our clubs deal directly with JOC when they have to apply for permission to host a road race, marathon or walk.

"The workshop will help the club representatives understand the things that they have to do before approaching JOC for approval."

Moloi said representatives of Drug Free South Africa will also do a presentation to the clubs on the use of banned substances.

"We are aware that athletes come up with all sorts of excuses when they are bust for using drugs, saying doctors or friends gave them flu medication.

"There are many accredited doctors who are involved directly in sports. Sportsmen and women should go to those sports physicians when they are sick."
