About 30 civil servants will appear in the Pietermaritzburg regional court today for fraudulently acquiring houses meant for the poor.

The Pietermaritzburg court has so far convicted 29 civil servants on similar charges.

All convicted fraudsters were required to sign an admission of debt and to undertake to pay back the money for the houses - with interest.

Yesterday the case against 17 public servants was postponed in the Hermanus regional court in Western Cape to next month.

"The case was postponed to allow their legal representatives to prepare for the case," department of housing spokesman Xolani Xundu said.

Xundu said the special investigation unit has completed about 3800 cases of public servants who illegally acquired RDP houses across the country.
