The Young Communist League (YCL) in Limpopo has called on its members to lobby for the nomination of Cassel Mathale as provincial ANC chairman in the coming provincial conference.

YCL acting provincial secretary Pat Makape said yesterday they believed Mathale was the only candidate who could lead the ANC over the next five years.

Their call follows that of the ANC Youth League in the province, which vowed to ensure Mathale's victory at the July conference.

"We believe Mathale fits perfectly the criteria as outlined in the 'Eye of the needle' document," said Makape.

He was referring to the document on the ANC website which describes leaders in their respective capacities.

According to the YCL's nomination list, Greater Sekhukhune district municipality executive mayor Dickson Masemola will become Mathale's deputy, with former sports, arts and culture MEC Joe Maswanganyi as secretary and Waterberg district municipality the executive mayor Pinkie Kekana as deputy secretary.

It also punts Dipuo Letsatsi as treasurer. Letsatsi was part of the interim leadership core during the late 90s.

"All these names will be properly canvassed among all YCL structures to influence processes in the ANC towards the provincial congress," Makape said.

It is understood that current chairman Sello Moloto, who is also premier of the province, will contest the chairmanship.

The province was taken by surprise last week when a document circulated about MEC for local government and housing Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, announcing her intention to stand for the chairmanship.

But Nkoana-Mashabane has since distanced herself from any knowledge of the origin of the document.

The ANCYL has reiterated its stance that no member of the ANC in the province, who was also elected into the organisation's NEC, should stand for the chairmanship, apparently in an effort to pave the way for Mathale.
