More than 1000 nominations were submitted for the Shoprite Checkers SABC2 Woman of the Year award.

The coveted award, in its 12th year, will be given in July to an outstanding woman who has made a difference to the social and economic wellbeing of her community.

The public nominated candidates in arts, culture and communication, business entrepreneurship, education, health, science and technology, social welfare and sport.

Finalists are judged on leadership skills, drive, vision and the relevance of their work to South Africa's socio-economic conditions.

Three finalists from each category are chosen. They will be announced on July 1. Each category winner receives R10000 and the overall winner gets R30000.
