I read with great interest your article (Sowetan, May 9) "Lest we forget ... Lessons of history soon fade away", describing your editor's trip to Poland and his experiences at the Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps.

I would like to thank you for introducing to South African readers the horrible experience of the people of Polish, Jewish and many other origins caused by the German Nazis during the occupation and the genocide that the Germans committed during the Second World War.

I would like to clarify that the concentration camps were established by German Nazis in occupied Poland and other Central and Eastern European countries.

The expression "concentration and death camps in Poland" could be misunderstood by those people who are not fully informed about the complicated European and Polish history.

Poland under the occupation of Nazi Germany lost six million of her citizens, half of them of Jewish origin. People of many other nationalities were exterminated in the Nazi concentration camps.

Thousands of Poles helped their Jewish compatriots under a penalty of death for the whole family.
