Education, health and sports are three key areas in which Transnet Foundation plays a crucial role of responsible corporate citizen. One of the most popular of these programmes is the Phelophepa Train .

Phelophepa was started in 1993 as a three-coach eye clinic built from redundant rolling stock.

It now boasts four clinics providing dental care, general healthcare and basic health education and counseling services.

Phelophepa operates in South Africa's remote, underdeveloped and underprivileged communities.

It is essentially a 16-coach train, that is also serving as a practical training platform for final year students seeking to specialise in disciplines including optometry and pharmacy.

Phelophepa, which has traveled more than 150 000 kilometres and treated about 75000 patients since its inception, covers 36 points annually.

It also facilitates community education, training, coaching and guidance programmes, which have benefited more than 5 000 volunteers.
