Elias Motsoaledi Municipality in Limpopo is investigating how a manager adjusted his yearly salary from R603029 to R700000 without approval.

The manager had allegedly also increased the salaries of other senior officials without the council's approval.

A document in Sowetan's possession indicates that Langa Kabini's salary notch moved from R603029 a year to R700000, an increase of R96971.

The yearly salary of the director of corporate services increased from R464400 to R490000.

The directors for strategic planning and for infrastructure had their salaries increased from R430000 to R490000.

The municipality's deputy chief financial officer's salary increased from R385000 to R390000.

The adjustments were allegedly made with effect from January.

According to a source, a council meeting was held in April last year where Kabini suggested the salary adjustments.

But the item was withdrawn due to insufficient support.

At that meeting, the directors for corporate services and for development and planning, and the municipal manager had excused themselves before the item was tabled.

It is not clear how Kabini managed to approve the salary increases.

Mayor Lionel Seloane confirmed yesterday that the municipality was investigating allegations of improper salary adjustments.

He said once completed, the person responsible for the adjustments would face the music.

"Claims of improper salary adjustments have cropped up. Heads will roll once we complete our investigations."
