A Mpumalanga taxi owner is in a serious condition in hospital after an attempt on his life by two men who shot him 10 times at the weekend.
The 38-year-old taxi owner, Mandla Zondo of Dirkiesdorp near Piet Retief, was driving his taxi when he was attacked by two gunmen, also in a taxi, on Sunday afternoon, police said.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane, pictured, of the Mpumalanga provincial police said the incident occurred at the Driefontein taxi rank at about 1.30pm. Khoabane said two men in a taxi blocked Zondo's way.
"When Zondo alighted and attempted to plead with them he was shot four times in the chest. He tried to escape but was hit six times again.
Khoabane said the attackers fled the scene, apparently thinking that Zondo was dead.
