Sharp sting

Many consumers will surely greet with elation the arrest this week of two mine employees by police while trying to sell explosives earmarked for ATM-bombing to an informer.

Many consumers will surely greet with elation the arrest this week of two mine employees by police while trying to sell explosives earmarked for ATM-bombing to an informer.

This should come as no surprise, given the inconvenience caused to consumers by the targeting of automated teller machines (ATMs) by bombers mainly in the townships in recent months.

Without presuming guilt on the part of those arrested, the sting marks a tactical breakthrough for police since it helps to cut heist gangs off from their apparent source for the tools of their trade.

Mines have long been the suspected source of dynamite used to bomb ATMs and that's why this week's bust is significant.

We hope the sting will lead to more arrests to help nip the scourge in the bud.
