Benefits not for all citizens

For a country that boasts First World technological prowess, such as South Africa, it is only logical that it would use this capacity to improve delivery of public services to its citizens.

For a country that boasts First World technological prowess, such as South Africa, it is only logical that it would use this capacity to improve delivery of public services to its citizens.

Sadly the benefits of such technological advances have - for some reason - not extended to all citizens.

They, for example, continue to elude most of the country's pensioners, who have to contend with an archaic payout method, waiting outdoors in long queues to receive their monthly grants.

Risks connected with this method abound. Heist gangs continually target pension payout points, as happened in Marble Hall in Limpopo this week, putting at risk the lives of mainly black pensioners .

The pensioners - most of them sickly - are forced to wake up early to be at payout points.

On Monday four people, including a 75-year-old pensioner, were gunned down and others injured in a botched robbery at a payout point in Moutse, Limpopo.

Why the Social Development Department does not use other methods for all pensioners, such as paying through banks or post offices, is not immediately clear .

This has not happened more than 10 years into democracy.

The department must move swiftly to scrap this system and treat our pensioners with dignity.
