A Kwazulu-Natal taxi boss is fighting for his life in hospital after unknown gunmen shot him.

Police say though the motive for the attack has not yet been established, they are not ruling out the possibility of it being related to taxi violence.

Nzuzo Mkhize and his brother were attacked in Durban's KwaMashu hostel on Sunday.

Mkhize was with his brother in the car when two unknown men approached them just after 6pm and opened fire on them.

Police spokesman Sizwe Nxumalo said Mkhize sustained several gunshot wounds to his body and is in a critical condition. His brother was shot in the knee.

In another incident the Pietermaritzburg police made a breakthrough when they busted three men suspected of being members of a house robbery gang operating in town.

Members of the dog unit were acting on a tip-off and arrived on the scene of the crime just in time before the gang could break into houses in the vicinity.

Police spokesman Henry Budhram said the police were travelling in unmarked vehicles in the area. They noticed three suspicious-looking men on the corner of Francis Staniland and Peter Brown roads.

"The suspects fled but were later caught," Budhram said.

"Their vehicle, which had been reported stolen by its owner a few weeks ago, was found abandoned in a nearby parking area."
