The health department in KwaZulu-Natal is probing allegations of misconduct against doctors at Manguzi Hospital.
The allegations include one of a doctor carrying out an operation on a dog while patients waited.
Yesterday MEC Peggy Nkonyeni said that she had appointed a task team to investigate a range of allegations against doctors at Manguzi.
One of the medics, Mark Blaylock, has been suspended without pay.
Other allegations against the doctor include assaulting a radiographer, breaking a window while trying to assault a staff member and calling staff members baboons.
Nkonyeni said a task team of medical specialists had been appointed to investigate Blaylock and other doctors for misconduct.
"As MEC for health in this province, I am tasked to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services and at the same time defending the dignity of our people by ensuring that they receive the best service while they are in our care," Nkonyeni said.
Earlier this year another doctor at the same hospital, Colin Pfaff, made headlines for contravening treasury regulations by administering dual therapy treatment before the health minister had approved revised guidelines for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
