Poor students from Modjadji in Limpopo will benefit from a new bursary scheme that has been set up by the Modjadji Royal Council to finance studies at tertiary institutions.

The bursary will start disbursing funds from next year.

Reigning Modjadji regent, Prince Mpapatla Modjadji said during an yearly Modjadji Traditional Community imbizo in Bolobedu that the scheme would be sustained with funds from levies collected from households in Bolobedu's 128 villages.

The students may start applying for bursaries later this year.

Grade 12 pupils were advised to work hard in order to pass with distinctions so that they could benefit from the scheme.

Headmen have been requested to encourage their subjects and businesspeople to pay levies in order to keep the bursary scheme sustainable.

Modjadji also said he was concerned that the Balobedu tribes were still being undermined compared to other tribes in the country.

He warned political leaders that the people were losing patience by being used to gain political office, only to be forgotten until the next elections.

"We are disturbed because people from our area are always left out when tenders were awarded in the province," he said.

He called on people to unite to work towards the development of their area.

Modjadji said his council would visit all villages around Modjadji to enforce compliance with by-laws.
