Humphrey Mokgobi, executive mayor of the Mopani district municipality in Limpopo, had to run for his life yesterday when unruly youths attacked him during a meeting at Enable village in the Sekororo area.
Mokgobi sped off in his car to escape youths clad in T-shirts with Premier Sello Moloto's picture. This happened at an ANC meeting at a local community hall.
Sowetan sources say Mokgobi allegedly became unpopular after having hurled insults at Moloto.
The angry community told him to leave the hall before he could address the meeting.
Sensing danger, Mokgobi allegedly got into his car and drove off.
He said community members who were opposed to Moloto tried to stop the youths from chasing Mokgobi away but failed.
Mokgobi was seen as being pro-Thabo Mbeki until he made an about-turn shortly after the outcome of the ANC's national conference in Polokwane in December.
