Five people were killed in separate accidents around KwaZulu-Natal over the long weekend.

In the most recent accident in the Drakensberg yesterday one person was killed in a head-on collision between two bakkies on the P600 road.

Mist and rainy weather compelled traffic officials to issue an urgent warning to holiday-makers returning inland on the N3 from KwaZulu-Natal .

The holiday-makers were cautioned to drive with extra care owing to heavy rain and strong winds on the Van Reenen's Pass between Ladysmith and Harrismith.

In another accident four people were seriously injured on the corner of Argyle and Avondale roads in Morningside, Durban, on Saturday.

In Limpopo a police vehicle transporting illegal Zimbabweans overturned, injuring a number of occupants at the weekend. The accident happened at a junction near the Venetia Mine outside Musina on Saturday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday the police lorry was carrying more than 30 Zimbabweans who had been arrested for crossing into the country illegally via the Pontdrift border post.

Ramatseba said three people were seriously injured and were taken to the nearby Musina Hospital for treatment. They were later discharged.

"We also learnt that some of the people escaped and fled on foot to avoid being deported to Zimbabwe," Ramatseba said.

He said an inquest docket had been opened in relation to the accident.

Investigations are continuing.
