BSA cleans up mess

The newly appointed Basketball South Africa interim committee begins with the process of cleaning up the mess at the scandal-dogged federation on Wednesday.

Led by Malesela "Gogga" Maleka, the committee was appointed by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) last week.

This was after a decision was taken by Sascoc to disband the Vusi Mgobhozi-led BSA executive committee following widespread allegations of financial mismanagement.

Sascoc decided to act on the problems at BSA after being bombarded with complaints, mainly from the Gauteng Basketball Association.

The interim committee was tasked to assess the financial state of BSA and conclude a financial audit for the year 2006-7 and 2007-8.

In addition, the committee will take measures to restore the functionality of BSA, including a review of provinces and affiliates status with the federation.

"We want to see basketball functioning once more as a proper structure with our athletes getting a chance to play competitively," said Maleka.

"In terms of the rules of Fiba (Federation of International Basketball Association), the interim committee has a lifespan of six months.

"As from Wednesday, the committee will begin with the process of getting back everybody back under one umbrella. That will also include doing a constitutional review of BSA, develop proper policies and guidelines for the federation."
