The Thohoyandou high court agreed last week to hear an urgent application by University of Venda students that alternative power be supplied during load shedding on campus.
The students filed papers to force acting vice-principal Jimmy Leatt to provide generators during load shedding.
They said load shedding was adversely affecting their studies.
The matter will be heard on June 20 when the respondent will file an affidavit explaining why the university should not have to provide generators
The students' attorney, Mashudu Nengwekhulu, says the students' future could be compromised if alternative power is not provided urgently.
The university maintains that it does not have any other source of power when load shedding takes place for two hours three days a week.
Students says they cannot study during blackouts because the library has to be closed.
Acting judge MM Snyman accepted the application as a matter to be heard urgently.
Sylvester Motadi, a student, says: "As students we have a right to alternative power when load shedding takes place because we are here to learn. The university should buy generators.
"We believe the money our parents pay should be used to provide lights and power during load shedding," Motadi says.
Students sit for their mid-year examinations in June and they are worried that they will not have enough time to prepare if the situation continues.
