Deputy general secretary of the South African Communist Party Jeremy Cronin yesterday warned that there was always a danger that liberation movements such as Zanu-PF in Zimbabwe could turn around while in power, imprison, kill and torture the very people they claim to represent.

Cronin was delivering the Chris Hani memorial lecture at University of KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. The theme of his lecture was: The Challenges facing Liberation Movements who are in Power.

He warned that what happened in Zimbabwe could easily happen in South Africa.

"We must not be in denial, but look on the challenges faced by the liberation movements. Let's examine ourselves as ANC and SACP so that we can not repeat what we see in other liberation movements," he said. He said "strategic growth of the economy" and not capitalism was the role of the government. - Mhlaba Memela
