Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
It's all systems go for the inaugural Sowetan BigWalk in Mapetla, Soweto on Workers Day, Thursday May 1.
It is powered by Coca-Cola South Africa in association with the Loop en Val Athletic Club, Jozi FM and Joburg Water. This brainchild of Madimo Promotions - led by Funky Lichaba and Mokhosi Moleko - is helping Sowetan's nation-building campaign to assume a fun-filled, family oriented hue. Bring along a picnic basket if you like because an area has been set aside at the venue.
The Sowetan Big Walk is commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sowetan's nation-building concept, philosophy and work, which was initiated by the newspaper's late Editor-in-Chief, Aggrey Klaaste, and honours the memory of legendary runner Matthews "Loop en Val" Motshwarateu.
The walk is set to become a tourism booster for Soweto, Johannesburg and all of Gauteng.
Leisurely walking will share the spotlight with competitive walking.
Walkers who complete the race will get commemorative gold medals and more than R10000 in prize money is up for grabs.
The walk is proudly and officially located on the yearly race calendar of Central Gauteng Athletics, an affiliate of Athletics South Africa (ASA).
There is a 5km fun walk and a 10km challenge. The entry fee is R10 for the 5km and R20 for the 10km. Walkers not affiliated to an athletics club pay an additional R15 for a temporary licence. Pensioners walk for free.
Register on race day from 7am. Pre-registration forms are also available at 61 Commando Road, Industria West between 10am and 4pm.
