Police in Eshowe have launched a manhunt for three youths suspected of killing a prominent doctor for his cellphone and a wallet on Friday.

Well-known dentist John Andrews, 55, was shot dead in front of his wife and son on Friday by unknown assailants.

Locals said he was respected in the community and especially known for his kindness in offering free treatment to the poor.

Police spokesman Superintendent Jay Naicker said the attackers entered the family home in Bulwer Street through a second floor toilet window.

"They held up the doctor, his wife and son at gunpoint and demanded cash," Naicker said.

He said one of the robbers had a firearm and opened fire on the dentist for no apparent reason.

"Andrews was shot in the head and chest and died on the scene," he said.

"The suspects fled with a wallet and cellphone after the shooting."

Eshowe SAPS detectives are investigating a case of murder. They are looking for three suspects aged between 18 and 25 years.

Anyone with information should contact Detective-Inspector Coenie Herbst on 084-251-0077 or Crime Stop on 086-001-011.
