All hubbies must emulate Parreira

Carlos Alberto Parreira has given a new meaning to matrimonial commitment.

Carlos Alberto Parreira has given a new meaning to matrimonial commitment.

Parreira is leaving behind football glitz and glamour to be with his wife Leila in her hour of need.

Not even the personal glory of appearing in his eighth World Cup could persuade him to let his wife of 36 years suffer on her own while he builds his football management empire in South Africa.

I wonder how many of us men would sacrifice wealth and privileges to be with our sick wives. We live in terrible times when not even lifethreatening emergencies distract us from chasing wealth.

We are so fixated on personal glory and status that we care little about wives, husbands, parents, siblings and children. The result is: lonely, successful people living lavish but empty lives with no moral grounding or family support.

Parreira is providing young men and women with profound inspiration - that glory and money is not everything and that we must take care of our loved ones in their hour of need and suffering because without them we might not have been where we are today.

I'm sure we all agree that Leila Parreira's life is more important than our dream to win the first soccer World Cup in Africa. Let's all wish her a speedy recovery.
