Soweto residents will learn more about water conservation at the Johannesburg Water Festival that is under way at Elkah Stadium.

This comes less than two weeks after a scare about contaminated water that saw people of Johannesburg being warned not to drink tap water.

The tap water has since been pronounced safe.

The festival is in its fifth year. It began on Monday and will end on Sunday.

"Joburg Water promises that this year's festival will not only be bigger but also better," said spokesman Baldwin Matsimela

"The festival is one of the largest celebrations on Johannesburg's official calendar."

Matsimela said the main objectives of the festival were to promote Johannesburg Water's public education programmes.

It also wanted to raise awareness of water and sanitation issues as well as promote the visibility of municipal services.

"The key aspects of the festival include open days for school children, on-site educational activities, service provider exhibitions, NGOs information-sharing sessions and a fun walk," he said.

The festival will close with a 5km fun walk from 6am to 9am and later with a family Freedom Day celebration.

Walkers will be able to compete side by side with TS Records personalities such as DJ Sbu, Prokid, Nhlanhla from Mafikizolo, Izinyoka as well as radio personalities such as Chilli M.
