Not only have the family of Bennett Phinda Nkosinathi Mazibuko lost a loved one but his pupils at Bhukulani High School have lost a gifted and dedicated teacher.

Mazibuko, 38, was shot and killed at the weekend in Diepkloof, Soweto.

He will be buried tomorrow at the Lenz Cemetery.

His friend of 15 years, Hlalanathi Manzini, 39, said he knew when they first met that they were destined to be friends.

Manzini said: "He was very intelligent. He came up with lots of ideas to make our lives easier.

"He was the mastermind behind China Town Savings Club in Meadowlands, Soweto."

Mazibuko started school at Mathafeni Lower Primary then attended Sindiso Higher Primary. He then went to Bhukulani High and matriculated at Naledi High School. He obtained his BA in education at Vista University in 1996.

He had previously taught at Willomead High, Thabo Secondary, Prudence Secondary and was teaching at Bhukulani High when he was shot and killed.

Mazibuko was many things to Bhukulani High: head of the English department; secretary to the governing body and a sports coordinator. He was also a staunch Orlando Pirates' fan.

"Thami was dedicated to teaching, offering his talents at weekends and during the holidays.

"He also had time for the ordinary people," said Manzini.

Mazibuko is survived by his wife Ntombi, two children, parents and a brother.

The service starts at 9am at the Khaya Centre in Zone 4, Diepkloof, Soweto, and will then proceed to the cemetery at 10am.
