SA fans not sold on Santana

Soccer fans who responded online are unconvinced by the selection of Joel Santana as new Bafana Bafana coach. And they're divided on whether a local coach would have been a better choice.

Soccer fans who responded online are unconvinced by the selection of Joel Santana as new Bafana Bafana coach. And they're divided on whether a local coach would have been a better choice.

This is the outcome of two opinion polls run on our website this week.

In the first we asked: Should Carlos Parreira be replaced with a local or international coach?

A total of 1383 votes were cast, of which 59,29 percent wanted a local coach to lead the national team, while 40,7 percent thought our football benefitted from international expertise.

Similarly, 31 percent of those who responded by sms were for a local coach and 14 percent an international coach.

In the second poll we asked readers: Will Joel Santana be able to achieve what others before him have failed to do?

With 1513 votes cast, 26,44 percent thought he was too expensive for what he could deliver, and 25,12 percent were worried because he has never coached a national side.

This time 29,74 percent reiterated the call for a local coach, while 18,70 percent responded favourably to Santana because of his experience with Brazilian clubs.
