The court has denied bail for a man who allegedly raped his niece, 8, while making his son, 9, watch.
It was the 26-year-old Balfour man's third court appearance, Mpumalanga police said yesterday.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said about 200 schoolchildren and women protested outside the court demanding that bail be denied.
The man allegedly raped the girl when her mother (the accused's sister) left their home in Siya- themba township to attend a funeral on April 13.
He was supposed to look after the girl for the night in the house the they shared, Khoabane said.
"He woke the girl up, took her into his bedroom and ordered her to take off her clothes.
"The accused then allegedly raped her before calling his son to the room. He then raped her for the second time in front of his son."
After the second rape he ordered his son to sleep next to his niece, and got into bed with them.
Later the accused woke up and raped the girl for the third time, again in front of his son, Khoabane said.
The boy was not sexually assaulted.
"The next morning, the man got ready for work, made the children breakfast, and told them not to go to school," Khoabane said.
"After he left the children immediately reported the incident to a family friend, who alerted police."
He was due to appear in court on May 8. - Sapa
