A Platinum Stars football player and a former colleague escaped death when their cars collided on the N3 in Germiston at midnight on Monday.

Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesman Superintendent Jimmy Maboko said the 29-year-old midfield striker collided with the 25-year-old who was driving in the same direction. He said both of them were sober.

"The 29-year-old alleges that a red BMW was overtaking him. The Nissan overturned while the BMW landed on the embankment."

Both the men were admitted to the Union Hospital, but Platinum Stars' Putco Mafani said the player was due to be released from hospital yesterday .
