Govt and parents to blame for school upheaval

I blame the government and parents for the situation at the Kwabhekilanga Secondary School in Alexandra.

I blame the government and parents for the situation at the Kwabhekilanga Secondary School in Alexandra.

Firstly, as parents we are the first people to impart discipline. If we do it wrong, it comes out in the wrong places such as at school and in play parks, where they bully and assault other children.

Who can teach in an environment where there is ill-discipline and rudeness? We are all concerned about the violence at schools and yet we do nothing to stop it at home - because that is where it all starts.

Some of these crimes are committed by our children. In the past two days there was an article about a hijacker who was shot dead. He had a student card on him at the time, so it just shows that crime is very close.

Coming back to the teachers and the situation in Alex, the parents of those students must have been aware of the lack of tuition at the school but hoped it would go away.

For Sadtu to threaten to cause havoc is also naïve because I'm also sure that they themselves were aware of the situation.

As the trade union for teachers they should have a complaints office where we as parents can go and complain about situations such as the one at Kwabhekilanga Secondary.

That would give then an opportunity to take action and call their members to order.

Sadtu should act more responsibly as a trade union.
