Lesotho got their 2009 Africa Youth Championships qualifiers off to a dream start by upsetting Zimbabwe 1-0 in Maseru on Sunday.

Peter Tale scored the only goal of the game, which also saw Lesotho Under-20 coach Abraham Lephoto starting his new job with a bang.

"It's a great start by Abraham and his team, especially on home soil," said Seephephe Matete, Lesotho Football Association technical director.

"They played well and we are excited that we have a great team. We are going to give them all the necessary support to qualify for the finals in Rwanda."

Lesotho are away to Harare in two weeks' time. Lephoto, who could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press, is one of the rising development coaches in Lesotho.

He attended an advanced coaching course in Germany two years ago, which was conducted by that country' s soccer federation.

Also attending the same course with Lephoto were South African legends Doctor Khumalo and Tebogo Moloi.

South Africa's Amajita will only start their campaign with the first round proper after getting a bye in the preliminary round.

Coach Serame Letsoaka's side recently played two international friendlies against Namibia and Botswana, winning the first game 2-1 and drawing 2-all in the second.

Results: Mauritania 1, Algeria 0; Sierra Leone 1, Senegal 1; Somalia 2, Kenya 1; Burundi 2, Malawi 1; Namibia 1, Botswana 1; Guinea 1, Liberia 0; Niger 2, Libya 0.
