Tessa van Heerden, spokesman for the Polokwane After-care Centre for the Mentally Disabled, says their objectives of turning their yearly golf day tournament into a major event are gaining momentum.

This after they successfully staged the event at Kameeldoring Country Club in Mokopane on Saturday.

The tournament is staged with the aim of raising funds for the Polokwane-based institution.

There was an increase of about 30 percent in participation and the number of female golfers also increased this year, much to the delight of the organisers.

"This year we managed to attract golfers from Polokwane, unlike last year where most of the participants were from Mokopane," said Van Heerden yesterday.

"We are not relaxing but working hard to make this tournament a provincial event in the true sense of the word. This means that we will try to rope in participants from other parts of Limpopo. We also want to engage other golfers from outside the province to popularise the tournament in other parts of the country.

"We are humbled by the continued support for this tournament and our gratitude also goes to the sponsors who have always been there for us," she said.

Van Heerden was not immediately ready yesterday morning to reveal how much they had raised on Saturday.

They were hoping to raise more than the R40000 accrued last year.

The tournament also has a crucial role to play in promoting golf development in the province.
