National First Division club FC AK was yesterday ordered by the Johannesburg high court to pay players close to R3 million or face possible liquidation.
The order was issued in favour of the SA Football Players Union (Safpu).
Confirming the order yesterday, Safpu lawyer Alex Eliott said they intended auctioning the controversy-plagued and heavily-indebted club to recoup the money owed to the union on behalf of the players.
Eliott said: "FC AK owed 21 players R3,5 million after they failed to pay them last year. We tried to reach a compromise with them for a settlement but in vain.
"We were prepared to offer them 50 percent discount provided they settle the debt by October last year, but they failed to pay."
Cappy Matutoane, the union's national organiser, said FC AK were ordered to pay them R2,8 million on behalf of the players.
Matutoane stressed that they will apply to have the club's assets attached to recover the money.
"This matter has been dragging on for a long time and we are happy that we finally won the order.
"We want to get everything that is owed to the players," a relieved Matutoane said yesterday.
Larry Marks, the FC AK lawyer, said that in terms of the court order, his client should pay a specific amount to Safpu.
He was, however, not able to disclose the exact amount his client has been ordered to pay.
But my client (FC AK) intend to appeal against the order, Marks said.
FC AK are a step closer to playing in the lucrative Absa Premiership after qualifying for the promotional playoffs.
