Provinces are making final preparations for matric re-writes, scheduled for early next month.

Gauteng MEC for education Angie Motshekga said preparations for the exams were going well.

The national exams are scheduled for May 5 to June 20.

"More pupils than expected have registered for the exams. We expected 11500 registrations but we have about 96000.

"The good thing is that pupils who failed in previous years have also registered," Motshekga said.

Limpopo education spokesman Ndo Mangala said they had also received registration forms from past pupils.

"All systems are in place. Our pupils have attended Saturday school and we are confident that they are ready."

He said that at least 35000 pupils had registered for the exams.

Charles Raseala, North West education spokesman, said: "Preparations for the exams are spot-on. We are ready. We have already circulated the exam timetable."

lThe Education Department this year introduced a new curriculum, the National Curriculum Statement, for matric pupils. Pupils who failed matric have until 2011 to re-write matric based on the old curriculum.
