Police in Durban have launched a manhunt for two men suspected of impersonating police officers and trying to solicit bribes from members of the public.

The manhunt comes after the arrest of another man for the same crime.

Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said yesterday the man was arrested in Mariannhill on Monday after police received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public who had fallen victim to the bogus police officers.

"It is alleged that the man and his two accomplices accosted a resident in Mariannhill at the weekend in full police uniform and forcibly took his computer.

"They told the victim that he would only get it back if he paid them R3000, which he did not have," said Mngomezulu.

The victim reported the matter to police and a trap was set by the national intervention unit on Monday.

"One of the men pitched up to collect the money and was arrested. The other two are still being sought. A 9mm pistol was found in his possession."
