Two Limpopo families are furious with a local funeral undertaker for allegedly delivering the wrong corpses to them at the weekend.
Mourners at Khakhala village near Giyani had to be turned away from the graveyard after the South African Funeral Undertakers brought the wrong body.
The family saw the body of a man they did not know when they opened the coffin.
"The funeral undertakers brought a body they mistook for that of my brother. So we could not continue with the burial," said Sipho Chavalala, a family spokesman for the late David Chavalala, who died a fortnight ago.
Chavalala said the corpse was only brought on Sunday, the morning of the funeral, despite several requests that the body be brought to the family a day before, as required by culture.
"We became suspicious when the undertakers seemed reluctant to bring the body of our relative on Saturday," he said.
He said it was a matter of sheer luck that they decided to check on the body when it was finally brought on the day of the funeral.
"On checking we discovered that the body brought to us for burial was not that of my brother.
"Had we not checked we would have buried the wrong person," said Chavalala.
It was later discovered that the body was that of an 85-year-old man from Mamitwa near Tzaneen, Chavalala said.
David's body was taken to the family of the elderly man. However, David was eventually buried on Monday.
South African Funeral Undertakers managing director Freddy Mongwe could not be reached for comment. Calls to his his phone went answered.
