Santos survive Cosmos raid

It was a question of "so near yet so far" for Jomo Cosmos who came close to scoring an upset win over Santos only to end up with a deserved 1-all draw.

Their display in the Absa Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Friday night has convinced the insistent Cosmos coach, Jomo Sono, that his side will not be relegated.

"Our main problem was finding the target but I am satisfied with the performance of my team," Sono said after the match.

"We should have punished Santos in the first half but let them off the hook. We are still under pressure to win our remaining games and I promise that we will win them."

Title-chasing Santos coach David Bright was optimistic about their championship hopes despite the draw.

"Our aim was to collect the maximum points but our opponents were all over us and we survived and fought back to earn the odd point," he said.

He was probably bemoaning a missed "gift" penalty by Erwin Isaacs in the 18th minute.

Referee Daniel Bennet clearly boobed when penalising Thapelo Tshilo for a foul on Isaacs. TV replays showed Isaacs crashing into Tshilo, who had the ball.

It was clear the soccer gods have not altogether deserted Ezenkosi when Avril Phadi blocked Isaacs' shot from the penalty spot. Isaacs' follow-up was off target.

Bongi Macala and Siza Dlamini of Cosmos wasted good scoring chances before Macala made amends with a screamer in the 16th minute.

Isaacs responded with a well-taken free-kick in the 32nd minute to level the scores.
