Speakers at the funeral of a mother and three children, who were allegedly hacked to death by their father, called on members of the community to make use of the existing programmes aimed at fighting family abuse.

Winisani Gladys Kharivhe, 28, and her three children Zwonaka, 7, Thendo, 3, and nine-month- old Maduvha were allegedly killed by their father, a member of South African National Defence Force, last Sunday at Mukula, outside Thohoyandou.

It is alleged that Mishack Kharivhe, 38, had argued with his wife before he hacked her and the three children to death with a spade.

Speakers from non-governmental organisations and the community said many lives were under threat because of the soft approach in dealing with domestic violence in the country.

Limpopo legislature speaker Tshenuwani Farisani urged members of the community to reclaim the culture of ubuntu and enhance the spirit that invites caring for one another. He said people should use existing programmes to fight against family violence and abuse.

Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment spokesman Rendani Ligudu said family violence was on the increase.

He said cases of abuse were being reported every month.
