ANC mum on ANCYL issue

The ANC has kept mum on whether the aborted ANC Youth League national congress will be on its agenda when it meets in Cape Town today.

ANC national spokesman Jessie Duarte yesterday said: "I can't tell you if we will address that issue or not. As soon as we are ready, we will let you know."

But an ANC insider said the organisation's national working committee's Cape Town meeting will discuss the impasse in the election of the new ANCYL leadership. The top-five officer bearers were elected amid physical confrontation between supporters of the presidential candidates, Julius Malema and Saki Mofokeng, at the league's national congress in Bloemfontein last week.

The dispute arose after Malema was elected president to replace Fikile Mbalula despite being supported by only two provinces. Malema beat the league's NEC member Mofokeng, who enjoyed the support of seven provinces. - Eric Naki
