Storyteller, poet and playwright Gcina Mhlophe has been honoured by Pretoria University with a doctorate in literature and philosophy.

The university is celebrating its centenary this year.

Mhlophe was excited when she spoke to Sowetan yesterday before flying to Boston, US, to take up a month-long writer's residency at the Isabella Stewart Museum.

"This honour comes at such an important time for the university and the fact that the university was once the scene of fear and inaccessibility for people who came from my background, makes me very excited," Mhlophe said.
