Mpumalanga police have asked members of the community to help them in tracking down a murderer and rapist who killed a Swaziland doctor and repeatedly raped his teenage girlfriend.
Gabriel Mkhumane, 48, was killed at the crime-ravaged KaNyamazane township near Nelspruit early this month. He was the deputy president of Swaziland's opposition party, the People's United Democratic Movement (Pudemo).
Police said Mkhumane was sitting in his luxury car with an 18-year-old girl believed to be his girlfriend when a man confronted them at about 9.45pm.
"The suspect pointed a firearm at the victims and ordered them to open the doors," said Mpumalanga police's organised crime unit spokesman Leonard Hlathi yesterday.
The suspect then took the doctor's bank cards and cellphones before driving in the car to a nearby dam.
"He opened the boot and ordered the doctor to get inside, then raped the girl inside the vehicle."
Hlathi said that, after raping the girl in the car, the man ordered her to lie down about 10m away from the car where he raped her again.
The man opened the boot, ordered the doctor out and instructed him to lie on the ground next to the girl.
"He shot the doctor in the left ear and when he screamed he shot him again, in the forehead, killing him instantly," said Hlathi.
The man drove with the girl to the N4-highway where he raped her again, this time in the bushes near the road.
He then drove to an ATM at a BP garage and tried to withdraw money at about 3am.
"While he was busy trying to withdraw the money, the girl escaped from the car and hid behind a house nearby.
"The suspect searched for her and later drove off," said Hlathi.
