The Limpopo man who allegedly hacked his wife and three children to death with a spade will be sent for mental observation after he tried to strip naked in court yesterday.
After the man's antics in court in Thohoyandou yesterday, the magistrate decided to send him for psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was fit to stand trial.
Mishack Kharivhe, 35, is accused of killing his wife and three children on Sunday.
Kharivhe shocked the packed courtroom when he attempted to undress.
His odd behaviour started a day after his arrest but got worse yesterday when he tried to undress minutes before his case started.
Kharivhe, a member of the SA National Defence Force, also started to laughed sarcastically the moment he entered the courtroom.
This prompted the magistrate to postpone the case to May 7.
The court was packed to capacity with people who had come to court to see the man they said was "heartless".
A female relative, who did not want to be named, described Kharivhe as a quiet and hilarious person.
"When faced with a problem, he would keep it to himself until he decided to take action," the relative said.
Kharivhe ran amok on Sunday morning, allegedly killing his wife and three children and later handed himself to the police.
Police said Kharivhe was allegedly involved in a protracted spat with his wife before attacking her and the children.
It is alleged he had accused his wife of infidelity.
Thohoyandou police spokesman Raidani Nkanukeni identified the victims as Winnie, 38, Zonaka, 7, Thendo, 3, and nine-month-old Mabuvha.
"We found the body of his wife in the kitchen and those of his two girls in other rooms on the floor in pools of blood. The body of his son had a wound to the head.
"Kharivhe handed himself to the police but would not say why he killed them," he added.
l Police at GaMatlala in Limpopo have arrested a 64-year-old woman and her 24-year-old son at Madietane village for allegedly killing the woman's boyfriend on Sunday.
