A security guard yesterday saved the day when he fatally shot a robber and injured another in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Wellington Langa, 28, was on patrol yesterday morning when a gardener ran out of a residential area screaming for help.

Police spokesman Sergeant Bheki Thwala said: "Four suspects, two of them armed, jumped over the wall of a house in Bryanston and hid behind shrubs.

They allegedly waited for the gardener who was busy working inside the yard. He noticed them, ran out and alerted a passing security van.

"Langa went to investigate, and when he approached the robbers, they fired a shot at him. He retaliated, fatally shooting one and injuring one in the buttocks.

"The two unarmed suspects surrendered and were taken into police custody. The injured one was taken to hospital."

Thwala said the three will appear in the Wynberg magistrate's court tomorrow to face charges of attempted robbery.
